CHINESE ELM BONSAI


      The Chinese Elm is one of the most popular Bonsai species and classified as a deciduous tree. It is a beautiful small tree and has a good rounded shape although in the warmer climates the leaves sometimes don’t fall as they should.The leaves are small and the twigs are fine which makes the Chinese Elm ideal for a Bonsai.

        You can make a Chinese Elm to any style of Bonsai that you wish. Young trees Must be repotted annually in early spring up until around five years and than after this time every second year. After Ten years the root system should be checked every year on the Chinese Elm and pruned only when necessary.

     Fertilize your Chinese Elm  lightly every week until  the buds have begun to open, usually this is early spring and than you can take it back to every two weeks from there until late summer. And be sure to water daily in the growing season and also mist in between if necessary and than during the winter only enough so the Chinese Elm does not dry out.

     Wiring the Chinese Elm is best done during the winter period, when you can see the basic shape of the tree and make sure that you position your tree so as it gets full light and sun. Please understand that the smaller trees need frost protection in the winter season to protect the root system because the Chinese Elm is sensitive and easily damaged.

      Prune the Chinese Elm during the growing season by trimming back the new shoots to one or two sets of leaves.  These trees can also handle leaf cutting in the mid summer period. Be sure to follow these general rules and you should create a beautiful Chinese Elm Bonsai.
