Rather than advertising Bonsai Soil suitable for growing and planting these dwarf trees, there has been a lot of reference within publications to potting mix. This is really incorrect as it is relating to commercial substances for advertising purposes. Bonsai Soil is quite a different mix.

Unlike the commercial potting mix we like Bonsai soil to have no sawdust or similar additives. There is available commercial mixes suitable for your projects although we have found them to be quite expensive to purchase. Some of the ingredients we use Soil consist of River Sand, Mulched Compost, Mushroom Mulch, Osmocote Fertilizer and coarse sand that contains traces of small pebble or rocks Osmocote Fertilizer. You will find if you are doing a lot of trees the best method is to get the aid of a concrete mixer, this will allow you to mix fully in one go a large burrow of Bonsai Soil.

The mixtures we use for Bonsai soil is as follows and have found the above method very satisfactory for the mixing process.

1 Part Washed River sand, 1 part mushroom Mulch, 2 parts 7mm Road Grit also a  Half Cup Osmocote Fertilizer and 33% part of Mulched Compost. The Vegetable Compost can be left out if necessary and Cow manure can be substituted for the Mushroom Mulch. Through years of practice and  close study of Bonsai plants it has been found, these plants thrive at a much greater rate in a soil that has a ph range of approximately 4.5 to 6.5 ph. 7.0 is neutral, meaning that using a slightly less acidic mixture would be ideal for creating better results from your Bonsai Soil.
