Shaping Bonsai with the Wire is an art on its own and is done after the pruning of the tree or plant. There are different grades of wire you can use and copper wire is usually used because it is very flexible, You can Use copper grades in 10, 12,14,16 these grades are good and you should use a heavy grade for your trunks, I use the no8 grade myself. The really fine wire is best for tying rather than for bending the branches. You can also use aluminum Wire for Shaping Bonsai.

Shaping Bonsai using wire on deciduous trees only during there growing season and the evergreen trees during the dormant period of their growth so that the branches can be shaped without to much damage to their growth and do not water the day before you want to wire and begin Shaping Bonsai Trees.

Shaping Bonsai should start at the bottom which is the lowest point of the tree and than work your way to the top, place the end of the wire at the base before you start winding and make sure it is deep in the soil. Start at the trunk which then goes to the main branch and make sure you use something behind the wire so you don’t damage the bark on your tree. Do not wire to tight and always when twirling the wire, do it at about a 45% angle after this you will be able to bend and shape with your hands but be careful not to damage the leaves and branches while you are shaping Bonsai.

Shaping Bonsai can be very creative, as soon as the tree has taken the form you desire you can than remove the wire. Do not leave the wire on for to long around a year is good but no longer. Remove the wire before the bark starts to form ridges. When you are ready to remove your wire start at the very outer part of your branches and again try not to damage any part along the way. Sometimes you will break a branch and you can use garden tape to fix it, and it should mend on its own as long as it is not completely broken if while Shaping bonsai the branch breaks completely, then just prune it back to the first side branch .
